Pulling Gold: England’s Triumph at the 2025 Tug of War World Games

England’s tug of war teams made their mark at The World Games 2025 in Chengdu, China (August 2025), pulling with passion and pride against the best in the world. The highlight came when the men’s 640 kg team stormed to gold, defeating reigning champions Switzerland in the final, while the women’s 500 kg team battled bravely to a fifth-place finish.
Men’s 640 kg: Gold Against the Defending Champions
The men’s team delivered a flawless performance in Chengdu. After powering past Belgium in the semifinal, they faced Switzerland — long-time masters of the 640 kg class — in the gold medal match.
With grit and strategy, England swept the final 3–0, toppling the defending champions and earning a historic victory. It was a performance built on relentless preparation: months of cycling sessions, weighted runs, and rope training.
One of the most inspiring aspects of this win was the diversity of the squad. The team combined teachers, farmers, tradesmen, and even a 72-year-old reserve, Richard Keightley, who has been pulling ropes for more than 50 years. Their triumph showed that tug of war is as much about experience and teamwork as raw strength.
Women’s 500 kg: Battling to Fifth
The England women’s team also impressed on the global stage. Facing tough competition and rain-soaked conditions, they fought through the group stages and capped their campaign by defeating the United States in the playoff for fifth place.
While the medals went to Chinese Taipei (gold), Switzerland (silver), and Sweden (bronze), the English women proved their quality and resilience. Their performance sets a strong foundation for future international events.
Global Highlights
The World Games brought together 18 tug of war teams from across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Switzerland claimed gold in the mixed 580 kg class, while Chinese Taipei extended their dominance in the women’s 500 kg with a sixth straight title.
The event also produced moments of camaraderie and inspiration, such as Dutch puller Vincent Wagenmans receiving a surprise birthday celebration mid-competition, and the unforgettable sight of teams competing in heavy rain and mud.
Kits Made in the UK
Both the men’s and women’s squads competed in custom-designed kits manufactured in the UK by us. Made from thick cotton and featuring protective padding down the right side and under the right arm, the shirts were built specifically for the demands of tug of war.
We’re proud to have supplied these kits for England’s campaign in Chengdu. Playing our part in helping athletes perform at their very best.
